Université de Base
A certifying program, paced by science and clinical practice.
Each monthly stage is designed to help you progressively acquire the physiological and biochemical foundations essential to understanding optimal health. Each module closes with a clinical case supervised by the Professor, to put the knowledge acquired into practice.
The program concludes with a final quiz and the presentation of a certifying clinical case, validating all the skills developed throughout the program.
Discover the Université de Base
Prof. Vincenzo Castronovo introduces the spirit of the program and its progression, from the atom to the mitochondria.
The program, month by month
Four months, nineteen chapters. Each month builds one pillar of the living organism and leads to a clinical case with the professor; the fourth carries the certifying final clinical case.
Foundations of life
Rebuild the biochemical and cellular foundation before any application.
The chemistry of life
Atoms, orbitals, covalent and ionic bonds, electronegativity; tetravalent carbon and its combinatorial diversity; hydrophobicity and relation to water.
Cell & molecular biology
The cell as a system (plasma membrane, cytosol, organelles, ionic gradients); density of biochemical activity.
Genetics
The medicine of the 4Ps, alternative splicing and isoforms, mutations, genotype and phenotype, basics of epigenetics.
Closing the month: clinical case with the professor.
The digestive system
"Every disease begins in the gut": the first pillar of micronutrition.
Digestive tract & pillars
The seven founding pillars of functional micronutrition; assessing digestive functionality.
Intestinal barrier & microbiome
Paneth cells, mucus, defensins; holobiont, eubiosis and dysbiosis, Gram positive and Gram negative.
The intestines
Duodenum, exocrine pancreas, liver, bile salts; glycemic regulation by the islets of Langerhans.
Closing the month: clinical case worked through with the professor.
Energy & lipids
The mitochondria at the center: producing energy, mastering its oxidative cost.
Fatty acids
Structure, transport, vitamin B5; membrane fluidity and the role of long chain omega-3s in cell communication.
Eicosanoids & inflammation
COX and LOX pathways, phospholipase A2, omega-6/omega-3 balance, resolvins and protectins.
Metabolism & oxidative stress
Photosynthesis, oxidative phosphorylation, free radicals, aging and the terrain of chronic disease.
End of month: clinical case with the professor.
Regulation & terrain
The major regulatory systems that shape the terrain, and their clinical translation.
Detoxification & methylation
Four hepatic and renal phases, conjugation, pH-dependent elimination; methylation cycle and epigenetic regulation.
Glucose metabolism
Hyperinsulinism, architect of chronic disease: obesity, sarcopenia, type 2 diabetes, cancer risk.
Immunity
Innate immunity (recognize, communicate, eliminate); PRR receptors and the sentinel role of the enterocyte.
Certification: final clinical case with the professor.
Clinical practice every month, certification at the end. Knowledge only becomes competence when confronted with reality: every month, a supervised clinical case turns theory into reasoning that can be applied to the patient.
Monthly clinical cases
Four sessions with the professor, one per month, mobilizing the pillars studied.
Integrated reasoning
Connecting biochemistry, digestion, lipids, energy and immunity into one unified reading of the terrain.
Certifying final clinical case
The fourth month's case, cross-disciplinary, the basis of certification.
Foundations that hold up against the real case
At the end of the four months, eight skills structure a complete physiological reading of the terrain, from the atom to immunity.
- 01
Read a molecular structure
Bonds, polarity, hydrophobicity, carbon geometry.
- 02
Understand the cell as a system
Organelles, membranes, gradients, the genetic origin of diversity.
- 03
Assess digestive functionality
Barrier, mucus, microbiome, pancreatic and hepatobiliary axes.
- 04
Manage lipid balance
Membrane fluidity, omega-3/6 balance, resolution of inflammation.
- 05
Reason through energy metabolism
OXPHOS, free radicals, oxidative stress and aging.
- 06
Conduct detox and methylation
Hepatic and renal phases, methylation cycle, epigenetics.
- 07
Decode glucose metabolism
Hyperinsulinism, terrain of chronic disease and cancer.
- 08
Organize the immune response
Recognition of non-self, PRR, the gut-immunity interface.
What practitioners say about it
General practitioners, specialists and health practitioners: they have taken the Université de Base, and they talk about it.
A fascinating program, remarkable for the richness of its content and the teaching qualities of its instructor. A week of pure delight in biology and nutritional medicine, made accessible and enjoyable by Professor Castronovo's vivid lectures.
If we ever want to transform how we care for our patients, we must first transform ourselves. The Université de Base is a wonderful gateway in that respect, leading toward a thrilling understanding of the Living. Professor Castronovo's work is truly exceptional.
When it says "base", it truly means it: you start from the atom and the electron, and rebuild biology from there. I now have tangible foundations and can be respected by my peers. I learned a great deal, with enormous intellectual pleasure and the certainty of caring for my patients better.
This is a high level program for anyone wishing to deepen their foundational knowledge. I recommend it to anyone eager to go further.
A very good program. Professor Castronovo is a great teacher, with wonderful interaction with the audience. I highly recommend this program.
I am very grateful for programs of such quality. Professor Castronovo is highly pedagogical and adds real value to the highly scientific information he shares in a disruptive, generous way.
Excellent organization. A speaker of great quality: experience and knowledge. Very clear explanation of the molecular mechanisms and the pathways leading to disease.
This program convinced me of how well nutritional therapy complements general medicine.
